Ruth Bader Ginsburg Inspired Knit and Crochet Patterns
We lost a national treasure this week, Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
If you haven’t had a chance to watch the documentary of her life, I highly recommend it.
I watched it with my daughter and we were both moved by what she has accomplished for women and for this country.

Her work has not gone unnoticed by the knitting community and there are a number of fabulous RBG inspired knitting & crochet projects.
Many of the designers in this post included thoughts on what RBG meant to them and why they created these designs. I have included those paragraphs in the descriptions below.

#2. Dissent Toque Knitting Pattern
I designed this toque as a fun addition to my Dissent series, patterns inspired by American Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I thought it would be great to have a hat pattern that could be used as a swatch for either the worsted or fingering weight sweater. I’ll admit that I had no plan, no thought, of Ruth Bader Ginsburg dying before its publication.
Now that she’s gone, I feel like this pattern has an added weight of sadness to it. I had to stop for sobbing while re-writing this paragraph. But I also want to continue my celebration of her lifelong fight for justice and her intense and incredible accessorizing. This pattern is customizable, including instructions for beanie and slouchy versions, so make your perfect hat to (subtly) express your Dissent. Here’s to Justice Ginsburg. May her memory be a blessing.

#3. RBG Shawl Knitting Pattern
Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a woman of great substance and style. The RBG Shawl is inspired by her wonderful collection of neckpieces and collars that she wears over her judicial robes, adding flair and statements. I drew on the wide array of styles in her collection that range from simple lace to more elaborately beaded ones.
The half-circle shawl starts with a garter tab and segues through simple eyelets and garter stitch to column lace and then to the classic Crown of Glory stitch. Garter stitch ridges and eyelet points form the edging.

This pattern is a small tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. To all that RBG did for us and all that she stood for.

#6. Dissent Pullover Knitting Pattern
If you know me, you’ll already know that I’m inspired by American Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. This is my second design that’s an interpretation of Justice Ginsburg’s Dissent jabot, a decorative collar that she wears when she reads dissenting opinions in the court. This fingering weight pullover comes with several versions to mix and match, including different sleeve and body lengths. I was thinking of persistent women as I knit all three samples. Wear yours with feminist defiance.

#7. RBG Sock Knitting Pattern
Inspired by our most notorious Supreme Court Justice, these socks feature Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s favorite jabot, a delicate white-beaded collar from South Africa. In the same way that Justice Ginsburg wears her jabots to make a statement, these socks represent the belief that everyone has the right to be empowered. These ankle socks are worked top-down using the magic loop method with stranded color work around the ankles and a gusset heel.
The instructions are written for magic loop, but DPNs will work too. The color work is charted.
You will need two colors, preferably high in contrast. I went with white on black to obviously mimic Justice Ginsburg’s robe and collar, but you could be very playful with colors as well.

#8. RBG Mittens Knitting Pattern
Knit a pair of mitts inspired by the notorious RBG. Mitts stranded color work images of Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the backs and quotes on the insides. One mitt says, “I dissent.” The other states, “Fight for the things you care about.”
