How to Knit Seed Stitch + 4 Easy Project Ideas!
Today we are going to talk about one of my favorite knitting stitches, the seed stitch!
This highly textured fabric looks amazing on either side which makes it ideal for knitting scarves, shawls, washcloths, and blankets.
In fact, in the second half of this post, you’ll learn 4 easy projects you can make with the seed stitch using and weight yarn!
First, check out the video below to learn how to knit the seed stitch and what it looks like when finished.

In this tutorial, I used worsted weight yarn (CYC #4 medium) and size US 8 needles.
Once you’ve made a seed stitch swatch, you know everything you need to knit a larger item.
How do you knit a seed stitch blanket and other easy projects?
As I mentioned above you can use seed stitch to knit a blanket, shawl, scarf, or washcloth. I’ll show you how easy it is!
Step 1: Count the Stitches
Make a swatch using the yarn and needle size you’ll be using for your project. This step is also know as measuring a gauge swatch.
Place a ruler across the swatch and count how many stitches you have across 4 inches.
For example, when I measure my swatch, I end up with sixteen stitches.
Step 2: How Many Stitches Per Inch
Divide that by four (because of the 4 inches we measured) and you’ll know how many stitches you have per inch. In this case, the stitch gauge is 4 stitches per inch.
With that information, you are ready to create your project.
How Many Stitches to Cast On?
Remember, with seed stitch you’ll cast on a multiple of 2 + 1. Here are the cast on stitches for each project.
Washcloth - 6” wide
3 stitches per inch - Cast on 19 stitches
4 stitches per inch - Cast on 25 stitches
5 stitches per inch - Cast on 31 stitches
6 stitches per inch - Cast on 37 stitches
Scarf - 8” wide
3 stitches per inch - Cast on 25 stitches
4 stitches per inch - Cast on 33 stitches
5 stitches per inch - Cast on 41 stitches
6 stitches per inch - Cast on 49 stitches
Shawl - 14” wide
3 stitches per inch - Cast on 43 stitches
4 stitches per inch - Cast on 57 stitches
5 stitches per inch - Cast on 71 stitches
6 stitches per inch - Cast on 85 stitches
Lap Blanket/Throw - 36” wide
3 stitches per inch - Cast on 109 stitches
4 stitches per inch - Cast on 145 stitches
5 stitches per inch - Cast on 181 stitches
6 stitches per inch - Cast on 217 stitches
With all of these projects, you’ll knit to the desired length and then bind off as shown in the video.
